Volunteer Car Service
Not having access to transport can be a huge problem for people living in rural areas, even if it is only on a temporary basis – perhaps following surgery. The inability to get out can make people feel isolated and trapped in their homes.
At Blackdown Support Group we understand how difficult this can be, and we have a network of volunteer drivers who are willing to give their time to take people out and make them feel part of their community. This can be for any number of reasons, including:
- Transport to and from medical appointments at GP practices, hospitals, opticians, dentists etc.
- Transport to local social events so that clients can keep in touch with friends
- Transport to exercise classes or other personal appointments
Prescription/Shopping Delivery
We can offer a prescription and shopping delivery service for those who are unable to leave the house or have no one to collect items for them.
Prescriptions can be delivered from all Blackdown Practice sites.
Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
As of September 2018 the Support Group has an updated specially converted WAV, or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, capable of carrying a wheelchair-bound passenger plus two people in addition to the driver. The vehicle has a vertically opening rear door with ramp, and an electric winch to ease entry for a wheelchair or mobility scooter.
The vehicle is available for hire and can be driven by one of our volunteers or anyone else with a full driving licence and of the age of 25 years or over. Full training is provided to all new users.
Wheelchair Loans
We have a selection of wheelchairs available to the public on short term loans, perhaps after a spell in hospital or if you would like to take a loved one out for the day and their mobility is limited.
Our wheelchairs are regularly serviced and easy to use, please contact the office for more information.
